Table of Contents Children imitate, that is, they copy the examples that they see and hear. When children observe you in social situations they begin to understand acceptable, as well as, unacceptable behavior; that is why what you do is so significant. This is the core message and training you will find in this book. When working with children, you are their model and children will copy or imitate what they hear you say and see you do. A child sees how you interact with others and learns to imitate you. This means that most of our behavior is learned in childhood, and if a behavior is learned, the behavior can be changed.
When parents and teachers are using the same techniques and the same wording, it is reinforcing what you want a child to do and how to behave. It is best when a child is receiving the same messages at home that he is receiving at school and vice versa. When there is consistency, a child will learn that the expectations are the same from the adults where he is spending most of his time---home and school. This is why, All Things Possible, combines what a teacher can do and what a parent can do in one book, to bring consistency to the interactions and discipline techniques used with a child. Following these guidelines in both the home and classroom means the chances of having positive and successful outcomes are more likely. It also means behaviors will become intrinsic for a child when repetition is maximized. |
